How To Transact Using BitPay
You are now all set to transact with Bitpay! This involves a couple of simple steps that you need to follow inorder to get moving;
Step 1. Move Bitcoin or Bitcoin Cash into your spending wallet
If you don’t yet have Bitcoin or Bitcoin Cash in your wallet yet, you’ll need to buy some. Exchanges are available all over the world, allowing users to convert any currency into and out of Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash. Every country and region is different, so you’ll want to do some research before choosing an exchange. For individuals in the United States, the BitPay app provides a simple integration with Coinbase allowing users to buy bitcoin directly from the app. Exchanges and accounts do not send your bitcoin payments immediately, so they are not good for paying BitPay merchants. To use your Bitcoin or Bitcoin Cash, withdraw your Bitcoin or Bitcoin Cash from the exchange to a Payment Protocol compatible wallet before attempting to spend it.
Step 2. Make a Payment
Making a blockchain payment is fast, convenient, and extremely secure. To make a payment, you won’t need to enter any sensitive card information. Instead, you’ll simply send the payment from your wallet app. Remember to send your payment during the 15-minute payment window. BitPay only guarantees the fixed BTC or BCH price for this time period. Do not send payments to expired invoices. There are several ways to pay a BitPay invoice from your wallet.
- Scan the QR code
If your wallet is on a different mobile device, you can scan this code to open the payment in your wallet. Your wallet will lock in with the correct receiving Bitcoin or Bitcoin Cash address and sending amount. Then make the payment.
- Open in Wallet
If your wallet is on the device you’re using to view the invoice, you can open the payment in your wallet by tapping here. Confirm everything is correct, and your wallet will make the payment.
- Send the Payment Manually
Copy the payment URL from the invoice and paste it in your wallet’s “Send” screen, check your payment details, and send the payment.
Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash Miner Fees
Miner fees are the cost your wallet pays for the computing power which confirms transactions on the Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash networks. Miner fees are not BitPay fees, and they cannot be refunded. These fees can be higher or lower depending on the number of transactions waiting to be confirmed on the Bitcoin or Bitcoin Cash networks.
Network Cost Fee
The Network Cost fee included in your invoice total covers the Bitcoin or Bitcoin Cash miner fee cost of BitPay’s transaction sweep for your payment. It is not included with refunds.
Refunds & Order Troubleshooting
BitPay provides tools and reporting for merchants to view successful payments and manage their own refunds in Bitcoin or Bitcoin Cash. If you would like a refund or need help in getting your order for a successful payment, please contact the merchant directly. They can initiate the refund process or help you get your purchase.
Remember that you will need to provide your BitPay invoice URL or your order ID for the merchant to assist you. Merchant refund policies differ, so please contact the merchant to discuss refund options.
Accepting a Blockchain Payment
With both Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash, there’s no sensitive customer information to collect and store, and there are no cards to charge. Customers simply send Bitcoin or Bitcoin Cash from their computer or mobile device directly to a payment address.
Once received, BitPay converts the Bitcoin or Bitcoin Cash to your preferred currency and adds the full amount of the payment to your next BitPay account settlement. Your bank account or cryptocurrency wallet will be remitted with the funds. You can accept blockchain payments in a variety of ways.
To receive a payment, open any of your Crypto Wallets, and click on the “Receive” option at the bottom left corner. Clicking on that will open up a page that has an Address and a QR Code. You can either copy the address or share the QR code to the sender. The address code can be generated as many times as possible, by clicking on the “reload/refresh”symbol found right beside the address.
You can also request for a specific amount of bitcoins based on current market rates [USD], by clicking on the “…” option on the top right side. Clicking on the “Share Address” option will also allow you to share the address across various platforms that are available on your smart phone.
Making a Blockchain Payment
Making a payment is very similar to accepting a payment, on the same page there is a “Send” option thats available at the bottom right corner. On opening the page, enter the address of the recipient in the space thats provide. You can also add multiple recipients by clicking on the “Add Recipient” option. You can also transfer crypto from one wallet to another using the “Transfer to Bitcoin Wallet”.
The “Activity” tab shows you a summary of all the transactions that you have carried out. It is basically a history of all the transactions.
Why do I not have an online account for my BitPay wallet?
You do not need an account on bitpay.com to use your BitPay Wallet. Your Wallet is secured using your device and your private key: by design, BitPay never has access to your bitcoin or your wallet. It’s extremely important that you do so. If you don’t set up a backup and lose your wallet (hard drive failure, theft, etc.), then the funds inside will not be able to be recovered.

I Wrote Down a Wallet Seed Backup Phrase Word Incorrectly. What Can I Do?
If you had written down your 12-word backup phrase but cannot get it to work when you attempt to import it into a wallet app, you may have written down one or more of the words on your list incorrectly. Usually there is only a small discrepancy between the word you have written down and the actual word of your backup phrase. To determine the correct word match, you may just need to match it to the most similar word actually used in bitcoin wallet backup phrases.
For a full list of the words used in bitcoin wallet seed phrases, you can view the following list: https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0039/english.txt
I can’t use BitPay anymore. How can I recover my funds from the BitPay wallet?
It is possible to recover funds from a BitPay or Copay wallet without using BitPay’s apps or BitPay’s wallet service. To recover your funds and send them to another non-BitPay wallet, go to the Copay Recovery Tool on GitHub. Consequently, provide your File/Text Backup or Wallet Recovery Phrase.
How to use the Recovery Tool;
The steps below will help you retrieve your BCH from the backup of the original bitcoin/bitcoin cash wallet using a client-side process. BitPay never obtains access to your private key, which never leaves your device:
- Firstly, Go to the recovery tool in your browser.
- Select your wallet configuration. The network should be
– btc/livenet for Bitcoin
– bch/livenet for Bitcoin Cash
- Enter your backup phrase(s) (and password if you set one)
- Accept the terms and conditions.
- Click Scan Wallet
- The wallet’s addresses will be derived and scanned in the appropriate network. You will now be able to see your balance.
- Finally, if you want to transfer your coins to an address, enter the receiving address to which you want to transfer your coins (for example, an exchange that receives BTC) and click Transfer.
Incase your funds were not recovered:
- Make sure the selected Chain is correct
- Repeat the process increasing the Gap value to 40, 80, 100, 120,..
I forgot my wallet’s encrypted password. What can I do?
Since your encrypted password is not managed by BitPay, there is no way to reset it. It is created and stored on your device only. If you need to regain access to your wallet because you have forgotten or lost the encrypt password, you must restore the wallet using the 12 word recovery phrase. If you do not have the recovery phrase, you will not be able to regain access to the wallet.
In case you have backed up your encrypted wallet, you can delete the wallet and then restore the wallet from your 12 word recovery phrase. Do not delete your wallet if you do not have your 12 word recovery phrase, as you will not be able to recover the deleted wallet without the 12 word recovery phrase.
To delete the wallet:
- Open the app and select the wallet to delete
- Click the top right icon
- Click Delete Wallet (last option in the bottom)
- Tap Delete and OK.
Furthermore, after the wallet is successfully deleted, you can proceed to restore the wallet from your 12 word recovery phrase.
