Privacy is very important when it comes to having a phone. The following steps will teach you how to lock an iPhone.
Step 1: Go to the home screen and click on Settings.
Step 2: Scroll down on the screen to see the option that reads: Touch ID & Passcode tab. Tap on it.
Now, there are two ways in which you can secure your iPhone.
- Using a Pass code
- Using Fingerprint
Lock iPhone using Pass-code
Step 1: On the screen that opens, tap on the Turn Passcode On option.
Step 2: You will automatically be guided to the Set Passcode screen, wherein you need to enter a pass code of your choice ( make sure its not easy for others to figure out and also not difficult for you to remember )
Step 3: You will be asked to re-enter the same code for confirmation
Once done, you are good to go. Henceforth, whenever your phone is locked ( you can lock it by just pressing the power button once. When you turn your phone on it will be locked ), you need to enter the pass code to unlock it and access your files.
Lock iPhone using Fingerprint
Step 1: Tap on Touch ID and Passcode > under Fingerprints, click on Add a Fingerprint…
Step 2: You will be directed to a screen titled ‘Touch ID’ where you need to register your fingerprint by placing your finger or thumb on the home button
Step 3: Once you place your finger, you need to keep placing and removing it multiple times for the phone to recognize your fingerprint (place and remove the finger when you feel a vibration)
Step 4: Continue the same process as you are moving forward to the Adjust Your Grip screen ( incase you are doing it wrong, the phone prompts you likewise, guiding how it should be done )
Step 5: You will be directed to a Complete screen where it declares that your Touch ID is ready. Select continue.
Going forward whenever your lock your iPhone, you can unlock it using your fingerprint. To change the fingerprint, you would need to follow the same process.
How do I change the layout of my pass code?
Incase you don’t like the default layout of a 6-Digit code, you can change it into your desirable layout. On the Change Passcode screen, click on Passcode Options. You can choose any layout among the three-
- Custom Alphanumeric Code : Allows you to keep an alphanumeric code.
- Custom Numeric Code : Allows you to keep a numeric code of any length.
- 4-Digit Numeric Code : Allows you to keep a 4-digit numeric code.
Will my Touch ID unlock only the iPhone?
Your touch ID not only unlocks your iPhone, you can also access your iTunes and App Store with your print. This is done by switching on the two options available in the Touch ID & Passcode page-

Is it possible to unlock the iPhone using more than one fingerprint?
Yes, it is. The Touch ID can store upto 10 individual fingerprints. You can add more prints using the Add a Fingerprint… tab and follow the steps mentioned in the above guide.
Can the fingerprints be managed?
Yes, the fingerprints can be renamed or deleted. Once you save a fingerprint, it is displayed in the Touch ID & Passcode screen. You can click on it to manage the same.
How many passcode attempts are allowed at the time of unlocking?
If you enter the wrong passcode 6 times simultaneously, iPhone gets disabled and asks you to try again after 1 minute. Henceforth, for every wrong attempt, the phone is disabled for 5 minutes.
